Powering On Machines After any Lockdown period

There are two possibilities for how machines were left before the lockdown began.

1. Powered completely off
2. Left in idle mode

For each of the possibilities, there are things to look out for when first approaching the machine. Below are some tips will be listed which should be adhered to. This is to ensure a smooth restart to all machining processes.

Powered completely off

Checks to be carried out when starting a machine after being powered off

  • Turn the main isolator on.
  • Ensure that front door is closed and set up KEY switch across to 0
  • Turn the NC on.
  • On power-up check for any alarms. If alarms are shown, navigate to the Alarm pages and record all data.  Refer to the manuals for details, but if there are questions please call the Service helpline before any corrective actions take place.
  • Before moving each of the axes. Ensure the feed-rate is turned down low. Then home return each axis by moving in the minus direction, upon completion of homing the machine each axis should be lit.
  • If the machine has a mill spindle with a tool in the nose, remove the tool by hand and then re-clamp.
  • With the front door open and chuck jaws open, slowly rotate any spindle by hand if possible main, second or mill spindle by hand
  • If there is no part in the chuck an alarm will be generated upon power on

Left in idle mode

Checks to be carried out when starting a machine after being powered off

  • Check for any alarms. If alarms are shown navigate to the Alarm pages and record all data.  Refer to the manuals for details, but if there are questions please call the Service helpline before any corrective actions take place.
  • Check all oil levels. Hydraulic, Lubrication, Grease, Chiller etc.  Check according to the machine maintenance manual.
  • Before moving any of the axes. Ensure the feed-rate is turned down low. Then home return each axis by moving the axis in the minus direction,  upon completion of homing the machine each axis should be lit.
  • If the machine has a mill spindle with a tool in the nose, remove the tool by hand and then re-clamp.
  • With the front door open and chuck jaws open slowly rotate any spindle by hand if possible the main, second or mill spindle by hand
  • If there is no part in the chuck an alarm will be generated upon power on

Things not to do upon powering up

  • Rapid home any of the machine axis at 100%
  • Run any spindles at full speed, start spindle slowly to enable lubrication to be pushed through the circuit
  • Complete a tool change in an automatic cycle
  • Ensure the correct tool in spindle and magazine
  • Run Machine with any interlock dis-connected
  • Complete a tool change in Auto
  • Complete a pallet change in Auto
  • Check ATC door operation up / down operation to allow Air pressure to disperse
